Ransomware Removal and Prevention

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a mean computer bug that has been crawling around our local businesses recently. More specifically, ransomware works like its name by hacking into your system and holding entree to your computer system until you pay a certain amount of money. This bug typically targets the files that are used the most and proceeds to make them unreadable through encryption. The only way to unlock the encryption is with a key that the attacker holds. According to EINSA’s top 15 cyber threats list, Ransomware has made an appearance as a top cyber-security threat multiple years in a row.

Why are these attacks a threat to your business?

Ransomware threats could potentially be putting your company at risk similar to our local business, Durham’s city computers and a Los Angeles hospital. These are just a few of the most recent attacks that ransomware has shown itself.

The attack is on large companies as well as small companies and individuals.

Ransomware is potentially a threat because of it’s sneaky ploy to accessing your system through an unsecured email or website visit.

The story of the attacked.

Both of the recent incidents of ransomware attacks mentioned resulted in very different outcomes. Durham’s city computers avoided paying a sum of money to their attackers because of their access to backup files. The problem lies in the businesses that don’t notice the sneaky ransomware plots and have their backup files also tarnished, leaving them the only option recommended by the FBI, just to pay the ransom fee. An example of this situation would be Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center who ended up paying around $17,000 for the key to their encrypted files.
